"Surveyors left Baker City this
morning for some Interior point.
Where, they would not state," says
the Baker City Herald of yesterday.
It Is thought, however, that they will
establish a camp at some point in the
John Day valley, and work a survey
of the proposed extension of the
Sumpter valley.

ho, will hereafter be obliged to work
on the streets. The street commis
sioner has been authorized to put them
to cleaning rubbish and gutters, and
otherwise beautifying the city.

Wash'., expects to harvest CO bushels
of wheat to the acre tihs year.
Some one in Palouse, Wash., is do
ing a wholesale business in killing
dogs by the use 'of strychnine. No
less than 25 have died within a few
days.

A resident of Krupp, Wash., gave his
wife a beating the other day. Citizens
of the place sent him word to stop It
or he would himself be whipped. That
same afternoon he procured a bottle of
whisky, went home aud his wife j
ioured the whisky on the ground. The
husband got a club and went after her. :

men. who. with stout clubs fathered; (
and in the melee, the wife beater was
put out of commission. Not by any j
assistance from his wife though. She
nitthed in and helped him. declaring
that she had lived with him for a long
time: that she was wliiped whenever (
her spouse so preferred, and that such
proceeding s on his part wore all right.
Spokane is suffering from an epi
demic of scarlet fever. The city has
appropriated l.ooo to aid in the cam- (
p:ign against the disease.
