Herman Silver, of-Los Angeles, has
come. Into possession of a specimen
of the strangest and rarest flower
known to scientists.
It Is the "Rose of Hell." a gigantic
blossom of solid wood, which grows
only on the edges of a Central Ameri
can volcano and gets Ita name from
the Indians.' who believe the crater Is
the entrance 'tit' "HVdei" anu ' tW" W0
som a native of the region inside.
Mr. Silver's specimen Is one of few
that have eyer been brought to this
conutry, and perhaps the finest. At

tough gnarled knot of a tree which
has been splintered, but closer ex
amination discloses the . fact that It
has petals of wood and bark and the
rough outlines of a flower. The petals
concave In form, are arranged muci
like the petals of half-grown rose
Their Inside surfaces are covered with
fine lines, which have the delicacy of
s fln hnnil rarvln. The Stem, which
Is about a foot long, la of some un
usual wood, which Is light and strong.
It is covered with heavy bark, which
seems to have been cracked by heat.
Both flower and stem are dark brown
the color of weather beaten boughs
and dry as tinder. The flower grows

the opportunity of hearing the con
cert at that time have requested that

ard's opera house Friday evening. The

Schulter, Okla., who has been visiting
her sister, Mrs. W. C. Young, of Cove,
during the past winter, left Monday
evening for The Dalles, where she
will be met by her fiance. Mr. Louis
Kracke, of Portland. The wedding
will take place upon their arrival In
Portland, and the happy couple will
at once begin housekeeping in a hand
some bungalow which Mr. Kracke has
prepared for his bride.

were romping near a bridge yesterday
in the vicinity of the home, when the
child espied an enormous rattlesnake.
Not knowing his danger and paying
no attention to the dog's barking, the
baby attempted to make friends with
the reptile. The dog, realizing the
danger, seized the little one by the
clothes and dragged him away. Mrs.
Coutts. hearing the frantic barking of-

Word has been received from Spo
kane that Mrs. A. Coolidge, a sister
of J..W. Scriber, died at her home In
that city last Monday. The Spokes
man Review of yesterday says:
Mrs. Einuia Scriber Coolidge, wife
of Alfred Coolidge. one of the direc
tors of the Tradem' National bank and
president of the Colfax National bank
of Colfax. Wash., died yesterday noon
at the resilience, 140" Ninth avenue.
She has been an Invalid for the last
10 years, having recently returned
from Arizona, where she spent the
winter.
She was born near Salnm. Ore., in
152 and received her ediiaction there
bring one' of the first students to grad
uate from the Willamette university.
While in Salem she met Mr. Coolidge
who lived at Sllverton, Ore., a short
distance from Salem. He moved to
CoHax. Wash., in 1SS1. where he
founded the Second National bank,
which later became the First Nation
al. After residing two years In Col
fax he returned to Salem, where he
married Mrs. Coolidge. who returned
with 'him to Colfax, where they made
tpre home until plx years aeo when
they fiioved to Spokane.
Mrs. Coolidge has been conspicuous
In social and benevolent circles for
