GRAND JURY STRIKES
PENDLETON LIQUOR MEN
Eight Indictments for illegal liquo
selling, two' each against four men,
were brought in unexpec tedly by the
grand Jury late yesterday afternoon.

Albert Dendauw, were the only Fen-

Grant and Red field.- the proprietors ot
the Athena near beer saloon, says the
East Oregon lan, ''
Oleson and Dendauw were two of
the most surprised" men in the city
when they were served with their
warrants of arrest by Deputy Sheriff
Bert Wilson last evening. They were
taken to the court house where their
bonds were fixed at $500. , Oleson had
no trouble in securing this amount
but his cook was less fortunate, Abb
Ogg finally coming to his rescue at 11
o'clock last night, so tbe fellow was
not compelled to spend" the night in

Attorney J. P. Winter appeared this
morning at 9 o'clock for the accused
men and entered a plea of not guilty
to the charge of selling liquor in vio
lation of the local option law. He
also filed a demurrer to the indict
ment on the ground that the law had
f.een repealed by the legislature. The
(emurrer waa overruled. '
Mr. Winter said he would probably
;nter pleas to the charges of selling
liquor to a minor, tomorrow morning

Ford Ellis will read the monologue
taken from the book entitled. "The
Crisis" next Wednesday evening at
the Central Church of Christ. The fol
lowing is a synoposis of the mono
logue:
Part 1.
A negro auction. Silas Whipple and
Colonel Carvel discuss the subject,
hlavery. Virginia Carvel becomes In-

Part 2.
Freeport Debate. Quarrel between
Whipple and Carvel. Hopper makes

makes an appeal to Abraham Lin
coln for the life of her cousin. The
monologue closes with the union of
the North and South.
. With the monologue there will be
given several pieces of music. The
price of admission will be twenty five
and fifteen cents. The entire proceeds
will be used in paying for a new
piano for the church.
