SYDNEY. N. Z., April 9.--A curious
ntiotnaly has recently been brought to
light in conneection with the legisla
tion permitting marriage with a de
seased wife's sister. A Sydney clergy
man was asked to marry a man to his
deceased wife' s sister's daughter. I'n
er me ecclesiastical luw the cere
mony could not take place, but since
marriage wijh the intended bride's
mother would have been allowable un
der the civil law, surely there could he
no ohjeitlon to the marriage of the
daughter? Tho point has not been
raised before In New South Wales
and the clergyman was In a quumlry.
He sought the advice of the Vivar
(leneral, who was of the opinion that
the marriage would be illegal. The
registrar gave a similar judgment
Had the parties gone to South Austra
lia, however, they could have been
legally married, and what Is equally
remarkable the ceremony would have,
been recognized as binding In New
South Wales. South Australia - was
apparently tho only portion of Ml"
Empire which, when it made marriage
with a deceased wifo's sister legal,
also extended the right to the sister's
daughter.

PLAY PLEASES
That loudly touted personage.
Florence Roberts, pleased a near full
house in the Steward last night. For
general balance of casts and absence
of the over-emotional. "The House of
Bondage" is too good to be dabbled

not have liked the underlying prin
ciples In the play, but the acting?
well, suffice it to say that it was good
