I that time, the Reclamation service
i and the Panama canal offer Inuvent-
ing facta and figures for compairsjn.
Although the difficulties thr.t bebet
the engineers and workers in the
Canal zone have been numerous find
vaired, and their achievements worthy
of all praiHe, few appreciate the Won
derful progress made by the "'-on-Hieiors
of the arid west" in the Ke
elamntion set vice. And they, have
worked almost against as great odds,
been beset by as hot a sun iu Hum
mer, and with snow in winter, which
latter the Canal folks doubtless would
be glad to have. Moreover, while
the men at Panama have been at worl
12 months in the year, the men in
the west have been able to put in
but eight months.
Most of the dams that constitute
the first step lu the various ecla
niation projects, started since the nt
of 192, are located among 'not n
tain fastnessess and are not opr-:i
to the ordinary means of comin.in'?
tion. Whereas the Panama railroad
already existed with its rails and
wires right alongside the route of
the canal. It has been necessary, in
the Reclamation service, to build
roads to haul the. cement and other
material from railroad to mountain
sites. At Yuma, 12 miles of rail
road had to be constructed, and the
engineers are. now at work on 24
miles more in New Mexico.
COMMUNITY
INTERESTS
"Community in t rests" are rapidly
cementing themselves In" La Grande.
One illustration of this is, how a com
munity concern, the Home Indepen
dent Telephone Company, growing
from a small company to a power
and Influence in two counties, has now
realized that a splendid investment
presents itself In the irrigation stock,
and liberal subscriptions was made to
day by that company.
Thus it goes, the community builds
up one firm by patronage of home
enterprises, and in turn that enter
prise aids in build':. I still othei
home enterprises.
