A movement to bring about closer
association between the different
young people's religious societies of
La Grande churches was started some
weeks ago, and Friday night there
will be a meeting at the Methodist
church of delegates from the Ep
worth League, the Baptist Young Peo
ple's Union and the Christian En
deavor societies. A contaltution and
by laws will be planned or at least
discussed at the meeting, and an earn
est effort will be made ot the end
that the young people of the different
churches may meet together oftener
for devotional sertice and social intercourse.

Baker, the treat African explorer,
who acordlng to the story of the man
from whom the gun was last pur
chased, used it on the Nile to shoot
hippopotami. The gun is a very
large one, something like six feet
over all. or from butt plate to muz
zle, whichever way it Is proper de
scribe the dimensions of a gun, and
has a capacity of a quarter pound of
powder and a proportionate quantity
of lead, or boulders, as more con
venient. It seems that upon the ai
rival of our ex-president at Messina
yesterday, among the stories related
to hiiu were several regarding the
prowess of the noted Baker, and his
curiosity was aroused regarding the
weapon that would kill these ani
mals at such increditable distances.

Donald, the Walla Walla stock dealer.
The car contained four colts, descend
ants of Caution, the famous stallion,
and eight head of Jersey heifers.
