Viewed from any standpoint, but
one. the La Grande band concert last
evening was a startling success. The
crowd was small far too small to be
a credit to the city. But such music!
The opening overture captured the
audience and from then on there was
continuous flow of harmony that de
lighted the hearers. In concert, In
solo,' or In groups, no matter how the
arrangement of Instruments, the re
sults were invariably the same. Se
lections were difficult, more so than
customary In a concert of this kind,
but no matter how Intricate the time,
how close the harmony, Conductor Se
lak always brushed perfection from
the galazy of players. In his own
style of baton manipulation the lead
er brings out soft strains and the
crash of instruments at the moments
the author Intended for them. If
there were any two numbers that
were superior to the others, it was
the Adkln clarinet solo and th? sex
tette. From out of the band, Ml3
Young thrilled the audience with a
violin solo, and Miss Foley was hetrd
at her best when she sang a selaor.bn
from "Alattinata." Those who were
there know the event to be the peer of
all concerts given here and those
who did not enjoy the treat incident
ally failing to support one of the hest
bands In the state, can only rue It.

"Coal Oil Jim" is in La Grande visit
ing relatives. He is not alone enthusi
astic about the oil prospects In Vale
and tributary country, but has many

Speaking of the oil prospects, he
affirms -that there is nothing to dam
