Contractor C. I). Goodnaugh has

day before Judge Bean. The argu
ment promises to be quite long, as
the first one. begun at 10 o'clock this
morning Is not finished at time of
going to press. When this case la
finished, that of Caviness vs La Grande
Irrigation Canal Company will b

The 12th of a series of bride gqmes
by members of the "500" club was
played yesterday at the home of Dr.
and Mrs. F. E. Moore. This completes
the series and as soon as the scores
are averaged up the winner of the set
will be awarded a prize. Mrs. "Jay
Van Curen Is considered winner of
the first place; Mrs. F. E. Moore sec
ond, andMrs. M. B. Donohue third.

Congressman Thomas of Ohio, Is
struggling with a tariff puzzle that

manufactures the hook has appealed
to him to straighten out a tangle
in the tariff. According to the In
formation that reaches Thomas, the
Dlngley bill placed a duty on fish
hook that was high enough to foster
the Industry of the country. Troubles
afterwards arose, however, over the
construction of the law. The treasury
department classified the hooks as
wire and admitted them at a great
ly reduced rate of duty. Hooks with
flies, of feathers, and gay colored silk
attached came in as featherbeds and
as silk. Now flie hook manufactur
ers demand that they be given a sec
tion pf the bill devoted entirely to
fishhooks and with a protection duty
attached.
