citizen, for it Is In these two capacities

of this paper to speak again concern-

not Interested in the proposition be
cause I am about to engage In the bus
iness of an architect, and "I say this)

In the broadest sense of the word, and
huve watched with pride the growth
of our high school and will always fur-
ther every Interest to make It stand
for the highest culture of every boy
and girl connected with It.
Hitherto I huve listened with re
spec! and consideration to Mr. Hock-
nherrvs nianr' plans and schemes
for the good of the school, and find
at a late hour that to be treated with
consideration In presenting my views
to (In public I must necessarily agree
with him. Now I wish tvpr"r;t n-
iithi-r plan to the public, which will
show that at the present time we have
adeiun(e school accommodations.
The sixth, seventh and eighth grades
enn be taught In some of the five va
cant room; this will give the entire
upper floor of our present high school
building consisting of six rooms and
an assembly room for the high school
In four of these rooms 160 pupils can
be more than comfortably seated. This
will fflve two additional rooms, one
for commercial, the other for labora
tory purposes. The assembly room
will bo used for the study room, and
as (here Is no time when over 80 pu
plls will be thus employed, about 60
or 70 of the desks now placed n this
room at the present time ran be re
moved, making abundant space for the
passing of the pupils to and from
their recitation rooms. This, too, may
bo the "Dream of a visionary," but I
find taxes are no dream and I also
find many earnest, though(ful people
agree with me, that It Is a mistake to
erect a new building with the present
number of unoccupied school rooms,
and I believe that my dreams wilt be
sweeter If I say what I believe to be,
true, even if I do bring upon myself
the adverse criticism of -my friend,
Mr, Hocker-berry.
It is true that dreams sometimes
foretell facts and make the present
appear more vividly to our vision. For
Instance, I might have drenmcd that
Mr. Hockenberry has been an Inhab
itant of our beautiful city for eight
years; (hat he has lived In a rented
house all of that time, and hns paid
the magnificent sum of $4.75 for taxes
and that for last year only.. I have
been a fixture in this city for 20 years,
own my home, free' from all Incum
brances and have paid taxes nearly
every year since I came here, and I
find th?y keep growing larger each
year until now I have to contribute
$68.72, with an excellent prospect of
doing the same thing next year. .
Now, Mr, Taxpayer, this statement
Is not a myth, fancy or dream, neither
nm I afflicted with brain storms very
often. Unfortunately or otherwise for
Mr. Hockenberry and myself It Is a
reality. I will admit that' I may be
weak-minded, but that does not
change the facts, as I have given them
in this article.
Should you have' any doubt about
them, search the records, as I have
done, and satisfy yourself.
