"If a bill Is presented under the Ini
tiative for the maintenance of the
Eastern Oregon Normal school, I be
lieve It will carry, I have sounded
the sentiment considerably, upon this
point. Even western Oregon people
speak highly favorable of the eastern
Oregon school and predict ' that the
people will vote to sustain It. There
Is a sentiment. In favor of the Eastern
Oregon Normal because this section of
the state has no other educational In
stitution. At the next election each
Normal school should stand alone."
Thus declared Senator C. J. Smith,
who returned to his home In Pendle
ton Friday, says the East Oregonlan.
Senator Smith has .Just returned from
attending the special session, having
been . detained In Portland yesterday
by a 'meeting of the state board of
health of which he Is a member. .
Regents to Blame. -
That the regents of the Normal
school are partly to blame for the de
feat of the Normals Is declared by
Senator Smith. According to the sen
ator he discovered during the specinl
session that a majority of even- the
senate ."would have favored the Nor
mals had not the regents at the start
Insisted upon $150,000 for new build
ings as well as an appropriation for
maintenance. Objection to the appro
priations for buildings was ralnd.
Then the Oregonlan gave support to
those who weer fighting the Mil and
a number of senators who are pros
pectlve candidates for governor, took
up the fight against the Normals on
