The first family to be brought to this or Wallowa county since the col onist rates became effective, was one that for size at least, "helps some." They came this morning; the father, John Brower, Mrs. Brower and 10 children, one after the other stepping from their coach with the ease and grace of a Rooseveltian family. Mr. Brower halls from Alberta, Canada but came to eastern Oregon via Cali fornia and If Wallowa county is suita ble, will locate there. Father of 18 Children. Mr. Brower Is now living with hiB second wife. The 12 children have been born to them, all but one living today. The eldest, a son of 19, Is now in Idaho, but this morning the par ents gathered their brood of 10 under protecting wings, while waiting for the Wallowa train to leave. Of the 10 here, the oldest is 17, and the youngest 11 months. With the first wfe, Mr. Brower had six children, all of whom nre llvlnir GO 10 VALE Last night D. M. Watson, the well known Portland restaurant man, and a party of Portland capitalists, passed through La Grande for Vale, to look over the Malheur oil fields. The dele gation was Joined here by Messrs. T. W. Davidson, president of the Multno mah Oil company, and George Baird. both of Union, who go to the fields to arrange for the installation of ma chinery already on the ground, eight miles from Vale. They expect to have drilling operations soon under way. The Portland people recently pur chased six sections of land in the oil belt, have incorporated a company, and their visit to the fields at this time Is to determine the point for well boring.
