Into tho lUvor.
Umatilla people In La Grande today
report the accidental drowning of an j
employe of the government boat at
Umatilla rapids Saturday afternoon.
PiHleS bringing the news did not know
the man's name, but he Is a relative
of Mr. Griffin who. has charge of the
dredging work. He was standing on
the deck of the scow when the rapid
current carried It out to midstream.
A col of heavy rope with one end an
chored ashpre, was pulled off bythe
boat's sudden leave, carrying the em
ploye with It. Boats were lowered to
catch the man when he came to tho
surface, but he never came up. When
the rope was hauled aboard It was
found the man's foot was entangled
In such a manner aa to hold him un
der the water, causing his death.
