Pythian Knights throughout the na
tion are celebrating today the 45th
anniversary of the founding of their
order. It was on February 19, 1864.
Washington, in what was known as
Temperance hall, v that Washington
lodge No. 1, Knights of Pythias, wns
organized. In the 45 years Ihut h tve
Intervened the fraternity has grown
until It Is now rapidly approaching
the million mark In membership, and.
according to officials, that goal is not
far distant. The order has followed
the flag and now has lodges In Ha
waii, Cuba, Porto Rico, the Philip
pines, Alaska and Panama.
The founder of the order was Justus
to whom the thought first came of or
ganizing a fraternal society, especially
f ir the social advantage of the great
itniy of clerks and employes in the
several government departments In
the city of Washington. This was In
the midst of the civil war, and all siir-
loundintrs teemed favorable to Insti
tuting such a body.

folin I'anlm's play of "Damon, and
Pythias." and this so impressed him
with its adaptability fcr the cerc-
uiotilal work of a fraternal society,
that he at once commenced the prep
aration of u ritual for u body to be
X'lown as the "Knights of Pythias."
This evening and tomorrow a Sun
day School institute will be held at
the Presbyterian church to which all
ire invited. This evening nt 7:30 p.
m., Rev. J. V. Mllligan, I. D., will
fpeak on "The Sunday School as an
Educational Institution." Sessions
will be held tomorrow at 2:30 p. m.
and 7:30 p. m. '
