self-defense, was relieved of the hor
rible anxiety that beset him from the
time he was Indicted until the conclu
sion whs reached by the Jury.
After the attorneys had concluded
their pleas and they hud been Instruct
ed by the judfje, the Jurymen filed out
In solemn style to the room In which
they had been confined for seven days.
Although It was four hours and a
quarter from the time the Jury re
tired until a verdict was reached; It
actually took only about an hour for
them to make up their minds as to
the Innocence of 4he defendant. Af
ter they had retired to the ante-room
from the court room, the discussion
was principally as to the meaning
the Judge's Instructions In regard
the law.

Stockton, Cal.. Feb. 9. Manuel
Oakes, a blind patient in the Stockton
state hospital for the insane, was mur
dered by a fellow patient, Herman J.
Martin, by beating the lutter's brains
out early this morning. Leaving his
lied, Oakes seized a galvanized iron
vessel and beat Martin's head to a
pulp. Oakes evidently imagined
Marlin was tormenting him for who:.
