At (he eleventh, hour the Conwell
lecture fell through, the e,astbound
train suddenly dropping from "on
time" to nearly two hours late, bring
ing the noted lecturer to La Grande
altogether too late to carry out his
appointment last night. It was a sore
disappointment to many, but the great
doctor has promised to return to the
lty When the National Baptist con
vention convenes in Portland next
summer. At that time 'he will maUe
It a point to visit La Grande and lec

The lecturer reached the cit and
put up at the Foley house last night.
He expressed deep regret over caus
ing such disappointment, but being
due at Boise tonight, he felt he must
hasten on and 83 left the city this
morning. Money received for tickets
will be returned through the persons
who sold the tickets in each case.

CONTEST TOMGIIT WITH I.A
t.lt.WDK DKAVS IMTKIWST,
I.H Grande Team Off to Mcrt Advc
sariett From Other Shi of the Val
ley Cove Confident.
Cove. Jan. 30. (Special.) Five
men coached to a point of proficiency
far greater than when the M. I. A.
team of La Grande played here, will
tonight line up against the high school
quintet from the county seat. In the
lime allowed for practice since the
last game here, the players have ac-
nulred manv feats of skill which at
that time they knew nothing of, and
the small, though enthusiastic school
mates here are hopeful of victory to
night. The llne-UD will be: Forwards
Den Roberts and Mfles Boothe; cen
ter, Kale; guards, Bell, Ingraham or
McNeal.
In a carryall, with four horses at
tached-and determined to cross the
wind-swept valley with as much speed
us possible, the La Grande team left
here this afternoon at 1:30. Manager
Earls took with him five players
aside form himself, namely: Carpy.
Captain C'hllders. Hamilton, ? Geddes
and Schofleld. The disagreeable ride
across the valley will have a tendency
of crippling the agility of the team
yet In the several hours' time allotted
at Cove, they should be able to "thaw
out" fairly well before the game
starts. The team returns tonight af
ter the game.

Big Iovlng Cup.
La Grande Is to have a gun tourna

pormoter among local gun men, and
a big time Is In store. Elgin has a
local club of crack shots, and Idaho
boasts of several excellent eyes. All
these added to the skill possessed by
La Grande members of the organiza
tion now being perfected, will make
a tournament of the first order.
Club Owim Clip.
The loving cup continually remains
in the ownership ot tne organisation ,
comprising western Idaho and eastern
Oregon gun clubs. The high shot at
the coming tournament takes posses
sion of the trophy and retains It until
me one wins It from him. The ac

there have been similar clubs in this
-ounty. but the Interstate organization
now being drawn up Is a new thing,
and revives the old club with new
blood and new interest. Among the
local marksmen who belong and are
going to compete no doubt, are L.
