I. T. Aoklcs Died Thin Morning at ila
Ikwpltat.
J. T. Arkles, one of the pioneers of
the Pacific Northwest, and formerly
a resident of this valley, died this
morning at the age pf 66 years, of
cancer of the stomach.
' The deceased made, his home In
southern Oregon for the past 20
years. Last April he went to Baker
City, where he was taken ill and about
10 weeks ago he was bought to La
Grande, the home of his brother, Geo.
Ackles, where he could he cared for.
'About five weeks ago Mr. and Mrs.
Ackles became unable to give him
proper enre and placed him in the hos
pital, where he was given the best of
attention. Following his Instructions
arid desire, no funeral services will bi
held. Dr. Scemann will offer prayer
at the grave. The Interment will take
place tomorrow at 18 o'clock In the
Ackles cemetery, north of this city.
J. T. Ackles was never married. He
leaves three sisters, two in Montana,
one in V'nshlngton, and his brother
here. For several years he owned a
for ma few miles north of this city.
He was always quiet, unpretentious,
and his friends were only limited by
his acquaintanceship.

Engineer J. H. Handrahan of this
city, and Miss Lulu Mitchell, daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Mitchell of
Union, were quietly married at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Lewis at
11 o'clock this morning. The nup
tials were performed by County Judge
Henry, with a half-dozen of the con
tracting party's most Intimate friends.
The bride 'was unattended and wore
a beautiful wedding gown of white
crepe de chine. The groom, too, was
unattended. Mr. and Mrs. Handra
han will spend a few days In Port
land, returning to make their home In
this cltv for some time to come at
least. They will be at home In the
Foley house. The bride is one of
Union's moat popular young ladles,
gifted with accomplishments and
virtues that have won her many
friends in La Grande as well. The
groom has been In La Grande at fre
quent intervals during the past two
years, coming to La Grande as an en
gineer from the middle west.
