Horses Arc Dying.
A disease has struck the horses on
the J. T. Galloway Gordon creek
ranch, which Ruy Shelton hna rented,
and already three have died, and an
other is sick, relates the Elgin Re
corder. The disease which Is killing
the horses Is unknown, and so far all
fforts to stay Its progress have avail
ed nothing. Two of the horses that
', died belonged to John Patterson, and
was an exceptionally fine span of work
horses. A ' fine 5-year-old colt be
longing to Mr. Shelton died, and the
other sick horse is the property of Mr,
Shelton. The disease seems to strike
the horses in the ankles anr1 knees and
within a few hours they are dead. A
veterinary was called Wednesday from ;
La Grande, and while he Inspected the (
horses he failed to give the disease a
name. It Is feared that the malady
will strike the other horses on the

ATTORNEY
Pendleton, Jan. 17. The Tribune
said Sunday morning:
The most interesting feature of the
grand Jury report which was submit
ted to Judge Bean yesterday afternoon
was the statement contained In It that
a member of the Umatilla County Bar
association had been guilty of grave
misconduct and that the matter should
be Investigated at once by the proper
officers of the liar association. No
Indictment was returned, according to
the statement, because the matter
could be handled more effectively by
the association.
When Interviewed by a Tribune re
porter last evening regarding the allu
sions In the closing paragraph of the
report, District Attorney G. W. Phelps
Bald: . t !
"The attorney referred to In the re
port is D. W. Bailey of Pendleton.
Acting upon the Instructions of the
Jury I have referred the matter to
Judge Stephen A. Lowell, as a mem
ber of the grievance committee of the
State Bar association, and have afso
referred It to the County Bar associa

! chairman,
Judge Lowell said regarding the
matter: .
"No direct charges have been laid
before either the county or the state
bar thus far, more than the statement
of the public report. The State Bar
association has a grievance committee
with Thomas G. Greene of Portland.
as chulrman. I am one of. the five
members of this committee. This
matter will be handled by the State
Bar association through this commit
tee. After Investigations have been
made and evidence collected, action
will bo laken."
