salesman for a Portland house.
A runaway horse, hitched to a cut
ter, pranced along the cement walks
on Adams avenue this afternoon, for
more than a block. Fortunately no
serious damage resulted. ,

A most interesting meeting of the
Ladies Neighborhood club took place
yesterday afternoon at the home of
Mrs. Anthony. Mrs. A. T. Hill was the
leader and presented a carefully pre
pared review ot "Ben Hur,'" which
was considered y those present one
of the features t the season. Mrs. C
E. Cox read a biographical sketch of
the author, Lev Wallace. Mrs. C. E.
Moore reviewed the first chapter of
the book under consideration, and
Mrs. William Ramsey told of the con
versation held between Lew Wallace
and Robert Ingersoll, as a result of
which discussion Lew Wallace wrote
"Bon Hur."
Mrs. Ferris Coming.
The Neighborhood club readily, em
braced the opportunity 'of securing u
lecture from Rev. Jeanette O. Ferris,
whom all who attended the meeting of
the State Federated clubs' held In this
city last November will remember. She
was one of the brilliant speakers of
the session. Mrs. Ferris Is chulrmnn
of the legislative committee of the
Michigan State Federation of Wo
man's club and vice-president rf the
Woman's. C.ivlc league of Grand Rap
Ids, Mich. Her lecture here will be
"Bonny Scotland, In Story and 3ong,"
being delivered on Robert Burns' anni
versary In will certainly appenl espe
cially to those of Scottish descent.

ture In Baker City and her presence
In eastern Oregon at that time mnde
