A. Adams declined today to Issue a
warrants for the arrest of the young
woman who sat upon her fiance's knee.
An Irate parent has asked for the ar
rest of his daughter for Oils hideous
offense. When ordered from the
house the young man kissed the girl.
This was too much for the father,
who ran to a Judge for a warrant.
Judge Adams could see no wrong In
this, and refused to give the warrant.

many cities In northern Italy . were
shaken by a severe quake this morn
ing. Vague reports Indicate a heavy
property loss. The cities affected are
Milan, Lombard), Venice, Padua, Ve

Salem, Jan. 13. The house ad
journed until 2 o'clock Monday, and
the senate until 11 o'clock Monday,
when the real grind will commence.
Salem, Jan. IS. Petitions asking
that Chamberlain promise to resign
after his election as Unltod States
senator, are being circulated among
the legislators by a steering commit
tee, today. 1 t '
The petitions are in direct violation
of the corrupt practices pot enacted
in the general (lection In June. It I

men signed the petitions, but it Is said
their idea Is simply to suggest to
Chamberlain that he ought to resign
House Members Out of Work.
' House members do not find it easy
to keep busy. Following the Introduc
tlon of a few resolutions and bills, it
look a recess until 11, in order to give
the senate an opportunity to concur
in concurrent resolution to adjourn
until 2 o'clock Monday. As soon as
the senate had taken this action the
house adjourned at 11:30.
Codify Oregon Ijiwh.
Representatives Buchanan of Doug
las, has Introduced a measure provid
Ing.for a new codification of Oregon
laws. Fifteen thousand will be ap
propriated if the measure pusses.
The codification bill provides that
'.he attorney general .shall supervise
the wok, and employ help. The new
code will be In two volumes, contaln-
ng the constitution of the United
States, of the state of Oegon, the act
it admission, and all statutes and sea
son laws.

The session of the senate opened
today with prayer for the first time,

Coffey's resolution for a Junketing
trip to Seattle by two senators and
three representatives, was voted down.
A refiolutlon providing for a commit
tee to prepare for the celebration of
Oregon admission day, whs passed.
A protest against the removal of
the present tariff on lumber Is con
templated by the ways and means
committee If congress passes a Joint
resolution, introduced In the house to
day by the Lnne county delegation.
Bean introduced the measure, ex
plaining the Injury the removal would
o. The rules were suspended and
the resolution adopted. Johns of Polk
Introduced his free Willamette locks
bill, providing for the appropriation j
of $300,000 for the purchase of the
locks, granted by the last legislature,
be kept alive until March 1 next year.
The Southern Pacific and the Port
land General Elotcrlc company are
owners of the locks, and will proba
bly fight the bill.
The word "graft" was -objectionable
to Senator Abraham, who moved to
have it stricken from a bill Introduced
by Kay, and substituted the word
waste." The bill was adopted.

anese Imperial World's exposition at
Toklo, was revealed today when the
report of the American commlnsion-
ers to the exposition was sent to con
gress. The report shows that the an
nounced Intention of foreign govern
ments to co-operate on a great scale
caused the Japanese government to
postpone the date in order to provide
many additional features being carried
