Rome, Dec. 29. Telegraphic com
munication has been restored as far
south as Palmi, each message bringing
stories of new horrors and confirm
ing reports that the beautiful city of
Messina Is blotted out. After the
buildings v.-ere crumbled by the earth
quake, . wave swept over the
city drowning many of' those not
killed by the quake. Fire followed the
wave, completing the work of de
struction. Between three and four
thousand wounded are accounted for.
' Prisoners Attack Women.
The refugee camp outside of Catsn
aro was attacked by prisoners who
escaped from prison. Insane, they
fell upon women and stole property of
every description from them. Ten
were killed by soldiers. No word has
been received from Italian torpedo
floating off Messina at the time of
the outbreak. It is feared it was
swamped and has gone down. Rag-1
nara was razed by fire following the
quake and Is said to have been com
pletely wiped out, killing 300.
