turned to her home In Omaha.
County Bridge Superintendent J. F,
Campbell and family, are spending the
holidays at their former home In Mil
ton. Mrs. J. S. Galloway, the Misses Myr
tie and Mabel Galloway, Emmett and
Laprele Smith of Union, were Christ
mas guests of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Smith of this city.

Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Morrison came
to La Grande last evening to spend
Christmas with Mrs. Morrison's parents,-Mr.

Mr. Morrison returned this morning,
while Mrs. Morrison will remain until
after Sunday.
At the final try-out for positions on
the high school debating team, held
last Thursday ..afternoon at the high
school, Joe Williamson was selected
leader, Joe King second, and Harry
Zurbrlck third. Marbel Green Is util
ity man.
Mrs. H. C Grady, accompanied by
her daughter, Miss Ellen, left this
morning for Walla Walla. Mrs. Gra
dy will spent the post-Christmas sea

" The forest service sent a grii'.y skull
to the chief of the biological survey at
Washington, D. C, Monday. The chief
requested thoiikull some time ago and
the forest -officers secured one from
a grizzly killed last summer by Joseph

Jack Dilllnger, a former La Grande
man, but now located at Cornucopia
arrived In town this morning and will
spend a few days shaking hands with
old-time friends. His family accom
panied him as far as Baker City,
where they remained, visiting friends.
William Herr was In the city today
from his farm near Hot Lake. Mr.
Herr sa,ys the elements seemed to
have been celebrating In his vicinity
yesterday. He says he has seen sev
eral wind storms In his days, but yes
terday's efforts surpassed anything
yet produced on his farm.
Charles Conkey, son of Mr. and
Mrs. C. H. Conkey, arrived yesterday
morning from Culver, Ind., where he
Is now well advanced In the second
year of his course In a military school.
After about two weeks spent with rel
atives he returns for tho final half
of this year's -work.
Frank Williams, the veteran mail
carrier, who for the past number of
years has been carrying the mall be
tween Hllgard and Starkey, expects to
return to his Hllgard home Monday.
He has been In La Grande the past
two months suffering with typhoid
fever.
John Brown of Allcel, was a La
Grande visitor yesterday. He was the
Christmas guest of Mr. and Mrs. J.
K. Fitzgerald. The younger ' member
of the Fitzgerald family, James uuu
William, returned to Allcel with him
and will remain over Sunday.

of this city. It, was a pretty, quiet
home wedding, following the cere
mony the wedding party partook of a
wedding supper served by Mrs. J. L.
Gibson. J
Mr. McCully Is a son of F. D. Mc
Cully,. one of the pioneer merchants
and business men of eastern Oregon.
Miss Cahoon for the pnst four years
has been a faithful and accommodat
ing employe of the Pacific Telephone
company of this city. After spending
a few days In Portland, the young peo
ple will make their home In Joseph,
where Mr. McCully Is cashier of the
Joseph National- bank.
Engineer ThronberR Married.
Engineer Thronberg of this city, was
married at North Powder last evening
to Miss Zella Hope. The ceremony
was attended by but a few intimate
friends. Mr. Stoop of Elgin, accom
panied the groom, -auC-- Iliad Lei; Lo
of North Powder, was bridesmaid.
Following the nuptials at the home of
Albert Allen, Mr. and Mrs. Thornberg

to mar the affair In any manner. .The
ladles In attendance proved themselves
fully capable of coping with the un
familiar duties of looking after their
own dances. Fancy gowns were many
and beautiful. There were so many
dancers of the old school present,
that the evening's entertainment could
not be complete without the old-fashioned
square dance, and grcnt wn the
amusement derived. The party broke
up at midnight and the hostesses and
hosts have been showered with con
gratulations for the big suocc-fs the
