4 LAWRENCE O. MURRAY,
Comptroller of the Currency.
Following the dictation of Raker-Orunt-L'nlon
County Woolgrowers' as
sociations, a committee appointed by
thme bodies on neodod legislation,
hits been busy at work for several days
ilnnvlntf In a concise form JiiMt what
they deem 1 best . for th nrotectlon
of sheep against wild animal, relates
the Baker City Herald.
As outlined to the legislators from
Paker county, woolgrowers ask that a
bounty of II per head bo placed on
coyotes, and that the law when panned
will be harmonious to the nshlngton
and Idaho laws of similar Intent.
There Is no scale offered for the
soa'pi of chukhi and mhr niiuotni:i
I animals that prey upon sheep, but it
Is anticipated that the new law shall
deHl with them also.
Several years ago Oregon had a law
that placed a bounty of $2 on each
coyoto scalp.'. The amount of revenue
paid out by each county In eastern
Oregon was great, but there was little
complaint. Western Oregon, however,
could see no need for such a law and
It was repealed as faw coyotes roamed
at will In those parts. There was not
many sheep raised In that region at
that time, either.
There Is another development that
adds to the coyote bill's importance
now, however. Western Oregon has
embarked In the Angora goBt busi
ness quite extensively and goat raisers
find their bandB have attracted the
coyote, resulting In considerable loss
each year.
It is thought that little difficulty
will be encountered In securing the
passage of a suitable coyote law dur
ing the coming session.
Borne of the most conspicuous win
dows I nine city are today decorated
with nifty cartoons on the coming
football game between La Grande and
Pendleton. The cartoons were pen
ciled by Waldo (leddes and are up to
standard. "Mlckelson's Dream," "The
Conqueror," "The Gladiator" hnd the
"Hone of Contention" are the titles of
the sketches.
