James B. Officer 'decided yesterday
afternoon that he would not allow an
appeal to be made in the supreme
court on the decision of the circuit
court Jury, finding him guilty of lar
ceny from a dwelling. As a conae-
quence, he asked to be taken to Sa
lem at once where he might commence
service, of h!swo-year sentence. Be
fore leaving he affirmed that he wilt
behave In- auch a manner while there
that he will be credited with good be
havior marks, and when he gets out,
to turn to a new leaf. The ypung man
will no doubt Wp forth from the

LAND OFFICE
CONTEST CASES ill
i
aily Observer, 65c per Month
BAY & ZWEIFEL
t Plumbers and Tinners
I Pump Work and Gutter Work a, Specialty
There will be unusual activity at the
land office for the next few weeks,
owing to a number of , contest cases
growing out of the opening of a town
ship in Wallowa county on September
15 last Our readers will remember
the line-up at the land office which
lasted for 20 days. The pending con
tests contain allegations on the part of
the contestants that they were bona
fide residents on the land at the time
and prior to the opening of the land
to settlement, but owing to the fact
that they were not present on the day
of the opening that others were per
mitted to file and they are thus de
prived of their rights. The ease that
opens today Is expected to last prac-
'tcally all of the week, and a portion
of tu t'.me there will be two contest
juat.s In progress. There are several
problems that will enter Into some of
these cases, one Is that the land is
more valuable for timber than for
agriclutural purposes, and to prove
either contention much evldenee will
be advanced pro and con.
. A cordial invitation to all.
