Baker City. Ic. I. Frank Burke,
a laboring man S3 year of age, was
killed this morning at t o'clock In
':wer fl'.Wb. at . the corner of ' Tenth
and Center streets.' His death, was
caused by the breaking of a water
main which precipitated a cave-In of
the bank and Burke was caught
while leaning over his shovel In the
act of removing dirt from the ditch.
When taken out his head and feet
were close together, the heavy weight
having forced him down, breaking his
back. But he was not removed until
10 o'clock.
As the water main broke and the
bank began to cave Gus Rydson and
Fred Sturh, who were working with
Bruke, had a hard time to get from
under the dirt. Rydson was caught
above the knees and only for his tre
mendous' vitality and physical power
he would have met the same fate as
his companion.
Water at once flooded the district
The city water department was
called over the 'phone and also a
messenger was sent to" the city hall,
but In some way things were misun
derstood and when one of the water
department appeared at Center and
Tenth streets, he had no key with
which to shut off the water. Robert
Bettner hastened to the hall and pro
cured necessary wrenches and tools.
and Street Superintendent Flnley cut
off the water at a plug a block away
from the accident. It was then neces
sary to dig a ditch to the sewer in or
der that surface water loft on the
ground and in the ditch be carried
away.
This all took time, during which
Frank Burke lay covered with several
tons of earth and water. An anxious
crowd soon gathered and when the
work of digging out the unfortunate
man began probably 500 people were
witnesses.
Several men handled shovels rapid
ly as soon as It was possible and after
a large quantity of dirt had been taken
from the ditch, the hand of Burke
could be seen holding on to the handle
of his shovel. It was the death grip
for the fingers were tightly clutching
the handle. Next uncovered was his
coat, and about 30 minutes after work
with shovels had begun the form of
Frank Burke was removed from its
unnatural grave.
