from the 1908 annual report of the
fourth assistant postmaster general,
allowing 'especially the growth of the
rural delivery, estimated requirement
for 1910. and recommendations: ,;'...

The number of petitions for rural
delivery, service filed during the past
fiscal year tiKSr gated -I04, an in
frefw of 1510 over the .previous year.
Of the petitions filed. 2981-have been
accepted, for. Investigation and 184 are
still ' under consideration. .
; On June 30, 1908, the service was In
operation on 39.277 routes, and 39;143
enrriers were employed. On 659
routes the service was tri-weekly. a de
crease of 80 as compared with the pre
vious year. , ' '- ' -' '"
During the year 172 new routes
were established, 17 routes discontin
ued, leaving the net Increase In the
number of rputes In operation 1549.

43,087 miles of road, overv which car
riers are required .to.'; travel dally.
Thirty-five thousand miles of these
roads are macadam, the remainder be
ing earth, sand, or gravel. Postmas
ters at rural delivery offices were re.
cently required to furnish the depart
ment with detailed reports on. roads
; covered by rural delivery, compilation
of which shows that since the service
was first established 70,63j,l2 has
been expended on roads traversed by

' The esltmate of $30,246,000 has been
aubmitted for the fiscal year 1910.-
J. M. Thompson, who for several
weeks has been 'operating In the coun
ty, purchasing fruit, was taken sick at
Hot Lake and on account bf his pecu
liar actions. Sheriff Chlldera was noti
fied und he brought him here this
morning, and before a heating before
judge 'Henry, was adjudged insane.
The asylum guards have been notified
and they are expected to arrive soon.
