SUCCESSFUL PLATFORM MEETING

Large Audience Present Evident That

the Local Option Laws tn Tills City

Will Be a Fac tor In the City Elec
tion Xext March. , V
The platform temperance service
held last evening in the Methodist
church was well attended.--The entire
program was carried out as program
med without exception. The special
music by the quartet entitled ' the
"Stainless Flag," was one hf the pleas
ing features. Under the topic of
"Boose In Business," George L. Cleaver
soon demonstrated by a practical Il
lustration how the credit of the booze
fighter Is soon Impaired.
H. J. Hockenberry, on, the "Saloon
In School," dwelt on the evils of the
saloon in ruining the finished product
of the school and cited , the fact that
with two exceptions every one of hi
Latin class' In college
had filled
drunkard's grave.
"Prohibition In Politics" was th
subject handled by George H. Currey,
who demonstrated that without enter
ing the field of politics,' prohibition
had accomplished very little beyond
educating the masses, but since enter
Ing and using practical political meth
oils over one-half of the territory of
the ynlted States was dry.
"Christian in Cltlsenshlp" was the
topic assigned to F. H. Green. ThlF
was Mr. Green's first appearance be
fore a La Grande audience. He han
dled his subject with such logic that
all who heard him were made known
the duty of christtanship at the ballot
box. .v . ':
John S. Hodgln, on "Acts In Action
look up the various' mages through
which prohibition had passed and
urged the necessity of the formation
A 1 ' ,r and uruer league, to assist
the officers in enforcing the laws and
to see that officers who dared to do
their duty were selected.
Kev. C E. Deal, on the "Peacher't
Platform." was the last on the pro-
gram.

THE SECRET OF STOMACH ILLS.
How Osteopathy Tract Thorn to Tlielr
Cause aud Rectifies Condition.
"The many stomach disorders are
too numerous to name. Some of the
commonest are atony (lack of tone or
strength), gastralgla (neuralgia of the
stomach),' chronic gastritis (changes
In the mucous membrane resulting in
alteration, of the secretions), hyper
chlorhydrla or hyperdacldlty (In
creased secretion of the hydrochloric
acid), and the so-called nervous dys
pepsia, which is a neurosis that may
be either motor, sensory or secretory
In character, or a combination of more
than one type, as It Is in many cases.
"The etymology of the above terms
shows that the underlying cause of the
different troubles Is improper action
of the nerves controlling the stomach.
One or more of the functions of secre
tion, peristalsis, sensation and ab
sorption Is deficient, excessive or, per
verted. These things do not occur
without a reason, so osteopaths look
for trouble along the course of the
nerves. If your telephone doesn't ring
or you get tl.'e wrong call, or If you
can't get central, or there's a buzzing
that prevents conversation, a lineman
is sent to fix It. Ho doefn't pour oi!
or calomel into the mouthpiece. He
examines the connections, and goes
over the line to see where the wires
ure crossed or grounded. So the oste
opath seeks to locate the trouble on
the stomach lines. The stomach "has
a mixed nerve supply; It receives
branches of both of 'the vagi, as wel!
as numerous branches of the sympa
thetic, through the solar plexus. '
"It Is always discovered on examin
ing patients with chronic, stomach
troubles that they have tender spots
which Indicate 'lesions that affect the
stomach nerves. The lesion may be
In the neck and affect the vagus, or
it may be In the upper part of the
back. The tenderness to the touch
which Is always felt at the point where
a lesion exists disappears when the
parts have been adjusted. What Is
more Important, the stomach symp
toms disappear." Metropolitan Maga
zine (October). ' ''. .

"Not enough money bags to go
around, and we need 1000 more." h
:he cry coming from the camp of the
Riverside Park headquarters. School
opened this morning and during the
week's holiday, the children respond
ed nobly to the call for money bags in
-vhlch to save "pennies for the "mile
f pennies" scheme, but there Is going
to be too many pennies for the bags
at hand.
Will Scatter Bags.
When a careful and thorough can
.ess has been made of the city for
membership to the park association, at
which time children will be asked to
pay SO cents and adults $1, these bags
will be left at the homes for children
to store pennies in, intil they have 60
or more. When . that amount is col
lected and brought to headquarters, a
'.bby button will be awarded to the
jlver, signifying that he Is a member.
y Extend Button Sciieme.
"Buy a button and become a mem
ber," that is the plan of the workers
Help tho park and brand yourself as
4, booster by wearing one of these but
tons, will be the slogan hereafter.
Thus far thre has been a liberal re-
ponse for both,bng3 and pennies, but
'.he latter campaign especially. Is un
organized yet, for the time is not ripe
fur collection of the money.- All tn It
Hie time, the association will call in
the pennies and figurative measure-
Hen's taken to ascertain how near the
imount of pennies at hand will make
out the "mile of pe.nnles."
