LEAVE HOME
The story of "Why Girls Leave
Home," which will be the attraction
at the Steward on Wednesday. Decem
ber 2, Is suld to be one of the unuxual
dramatic plays of great Intensity.' The
story Is that f a 'young and beautiful
girl whoHi-t character Is misunderstood
by hcr'.eldcr brother, who seeks to
drive Instead of conxing her and she Is
Induced, to believe thai there is more
In a "Hoheroinn" life than In the quiet
At lite Steward WtciiiIkt :
life of her homer She Is saved from
the evils of that kind of a life by good
friends and a constant lover, and all
ends happily with virtue triumphant
and villain exposed and punished. E.
J. Carpenter has spared no expense In
stuping the play: the scenic Investi
ture being very elaborate, while the
members of the company are peoph
especially suited to the characters they
portray.

La Grande Ice-skating adepts were
foiled yesterday by the. heavy snow
storm. With glarry Ice bating them on
the night before, many had made ar
rangements to visit Perry Sunday and
enjoy' the splendid skating faculties
that appeared to be In store. But the
snow has ruined the lee tor the pres
ent at least. Though only about two
Jnches In depth, the snow is so wet and
the surface of the Ice so soft that the
two haVe been amalgamated into a
substance that does not permit Ice
skating with the highest degree of
pleasure. ... , ,
' Week of Prayer. !
At a conference of representatives
of seven lay brotherhoods in the
United States held in Chicago, Janu
ary 23. 19'8, It was voted:
"That we recommend to our broth
erhoods and to other, organizations of
men and to missionary boards through
out the world the observance of the
week beginning with the Sunday fol
lowing the last Thursday in Novem
ber as a week of special prayer for
the 'spread of Christ's kingdom among
men throughout the world.'.' ,
This suggestion which comes from
an entirely lay source, has been heart
ily endorsed by the various authorities
in all the bodies represented, which
Included Episcopalians, Presbyterians,
Methodists, Baptists and others.
This week will be observed by St.
Peter's church, beginning on Sunday
tinnlnc throughout the week
