by either natural or artlficinl means,
materials which contain notnblu quan
tities of either Hturch or Hiigar may be
tillltzed for making alcohol. The
more Important sources of alcohol are
the cereals, potatoes, moluses and
fruits. In France ajcohol Is chiefly
made fvom the augur beet, In (l. rmuny
from the potato and In America from
corn. A bushel of corn will yield ap
proximately 2 gallons of 93 per cent
alcohol; a bushel of potatoes three
fourths of a gallon and u fouxhel of ap
ple one-third of a gnllon. The yield
depends directly upon the augur and
tarch content of the material used
arid. in general sugar will yield one
half Its weight of alcohol.
In the large distilleries It cost
l.,.ni 17 cents to manufacture and
place on the market-one gallon of al
cohol and the cost of the raw material
used brings this ordinarily to approx
imately 30 cents. Allowing for the
Ttr-cvvary profit, alcohol will reach the
consumer at about 40c per gallon. But
alcohol at 40 cents can compete with
kerosene at 2" cents for lighting pur
poses and In competition kerosene can
never demand more than one-half the
market price of alcohol.
