has deep significance In this county
the game between the La Grande high
school and the Cove club team on the
local grounds on Thanksgiving day.
Preparations have been made to ac
commodate the largest crowd of sev
eral years without Interfering with the
players. The squnred arena Is safely
roped with wire, and.- with ample
forces of policemen there will not be
a foot on the gridiron that has no
business there. The championship of
the county depends on the victory. '
Cove has lost and won In -such a
way that It must give La Grande a de
cisive whipping to claim the cham
pionship of the county. Again, La
Grande, which ably' and manfully
coped with Pendleton and Baker City
teams and, yet nearly lost to Elgin, a
tea mhandlly beaten by Cove. Though
rather Intricate "dope," football fol
lowers can show by figures that Cove
should win the Thanksgiving game.
But with the Elgin game, which Is
taken as a basis for the argument, an
uncertain affair and played In a spirit
if over-confidence. La Grande has a
mighty fine chance to' win. , Admitted
ly It made a fine showing In the two
big games and a decidedly poor one at
Slyin, the chances are that when the
decisive game of next Thursday Is
called, tho local lads will go into the
fray with a determination ,to win that
they may well need before the game Is
aver. '..,.
As usual La Grande will bo far the
'lghter team of the two aggregations.
But It must be admitted that the lo
cals are coached to a higher degree of
?ffllceney, and despite what be said
to the contrary, will show the rooter
that It has much better endurance than
the muscular and hard-working mem
bers of the Cove team. .
Harry Walters, the hard-playing
"go-get-'em" individual of the past In
Island City's career, will figure con
spicuously on the field at that time
under Cove's colors.
Thanksgiving Services.
Union Thanksgiving services, will b
ie!d In the First Baptist church on
Thursday evening. Rev. S. B. Taylor.
f Central Church,' will preach the ser
.non, and Other pastors and Christian
forces of the city will participate lr.
,he services. ' Let all the city repair
to the vlaee of worship and render
hanks to God for bountiful gifts of
