Arriving from Huntington last night
with two prisoners, Special Agent E.
B. Wood, of the O. II. & N., saw that

the iron dooiB, said: "Thin Is the time
that we have two of the boldest and
smoothest box car thieves that have
ever operated In the state of Oregon,
'relate the Baker City Herald. Their
names, as they give them, are James
Plover and George Howell, and they
are now bound over to the next grand
Jury under 1500 bonds each."
Wanted for Some Time.
When City Marahal Brown and
Deputy Sheriff Hannon of Hunting

and arrested two men for vagrancy,
they did not know that they were
placing the law'a fingers on two of the
most noted bax car thieves that v the

officers at that time knew, except va

lary agnlnst Plover and Unwell. They
were given a preliminary hearing be
fore a Justice of the pence and Hunt
ington und bound over to the Baker
county grand Jury in the sum of 3500
each. Being unable to give bond the
two men were brought to thin city last
night and placed In Jail.
As near as can be learned these men
have been persistent In robbing box
cars throughout this section, especial
ly on the O. R. & N. and Short Line
rullways, but they have been so smooth
with their work that railroad detec
them. Several robberies have born
traced to them, but it was Impossible
to locate Plover and Howell, their
headotiartcr seemingly having been
at Salt Lake.
' Vacation Xot Granted.
In spite of earnest solicitation by a
committee of students and a petition
bearing 850 signatures, the faculty has
deemed it best not to grant a recess
during the first two and one-hnlf days
of next week, as O. A. C. has done.
They have, however, decided to grant
a full and free leave of absence to any
student making proper application.
Classes will go on the same as usual,
but students having excuses will not be
asked to make up work missed. Ore
