Baker City, Nov. 11. The Herald
said last night:
'. With the bollef that nothing ia too
good for the women and men who de
vote their lives to teaching the young
of the state of Oregon. Baker-City Is
going to try and oudto all former ef
forts In the way of entertainment when
the State Teacher asxoclatlon meets
here November 23, 24 and ti.
Besides the regular program, which
Is filled with the best possible to ob
tain In the way of lectures, munic, etc.,
there will be a football game between
Salem and Baker high schools, which
promises' to be one of the exciting
games of the year.
The sessions of the association will
be held In the Pythian castle on Wash
ington and Second street The O. R.
A N. railroad has given an excursion
rate for the Baker meeting and Coun
ty Superintendent Smith states that
In his opinion there will be at least 400
teachers present
Already preparations are on foot In
La Grande and all Union county, in
fact, for general attendance at these
meetings. The event is one annually
attended by as many teachers as pos
sible. As yet no definite statement
can be made relative to the nun ber to
go from this county, but It will reach
50 at least, 1 the common belief.

' Mr. McMahan, J. W. Sctiber's attor
ney, said this jnornlng that In all
probability Scrlber's friends and rela
tives would make an effort In the near
future to make food the banker's
Shortage, which has been estimated at
$125,000. If this is to be done it will
be with the hopes of mitigating sen
tence of the court in even that Scrt
ber decides to plead guilty to the
charge. Mr.. McMahan, who is acting
aa Scrlber'a attorney, said that as yet
It has not been decided whether Scrl
ber will plead guilty and ask for
clemency or fight the case which the
government is to prosecute.
Scrlbar will remain In Portland un
til he is wanted In La Grande to as
sist those in charge of the bank's af
fairs In straightening out the situation
Mr. McMahan said that the reports
of threats to lynch the . banker were
without foundation and that Scrlber
would return to his home town at the
proper time. The attorney also said
that Scrlber's friends and relativea had
no fear 'of his committing suicide.
