Grim death has made its appearance
In La Grande once more and thla time
it was the rank of youth Just matur
ing into manhood that was struck.
Roy Goodnough Is dead. He fought
the Inroads of death wonderfully for
24 hours, and his demise during that
period would not have been unexpect
ed. Following a long selge with ty
phoid fever and preceded directly by
24 hours of almost constant uncon
sciousness, he passed away quietly at
the Grande Ronde hospital between
12:30 and 1 o'clock this morning. His
family has been at the bedside during
sinking hours. ' , . .
Sank Tucnlay Morning. .
Early Tuesday ' morning, ' about 2
o'clock, he began sinking and from
that time on, physicians were positive
that nothing could be done to avert
the final results. All day Tuesday un
til late in the afternoon he lay In a
stupor, but for a few moments rallied
and recognized his mother. That was
his last conscious act ; ' i

His host of friends in this city were
encouraged when he survived through
yesterday, but his family .realized that
he was sinking rapidly. Finally, short
ly after midnight, he breathed his
last, and La Grande lost one of Its
young men who enjoyed the respect
of every man, woman and child who
knew him. ; ''.'"" .
Was Extremely Popular.
Born and raised In La Grande, every
one knew him. His acquaintance was
perhaps the largest :of any young man
of hfs age In the.city. Closely identi
fied with the younger element, he was
always the moving spirit and his word
was law with his friends, , He received
his education in the city schools, grad
uating from the high school with the
class of '06. During his Bchool life
he enjoyed the distinction of being the
most popular member of his class, of
his school room, the most popular
members of the football squads and.
In fact, held that distinction In every
circle In which he moved.
His health haa never been robust
and frequent selgea of Illness have
been his lot, but he arose from sick
beds as kind and as affectionate to
his parents and chums as he was be
fore he went down under the painful
illnesses. Having attained his 20th
year on the 11th day of "last Septem
ber, he was still a boy, Just launching
forth Into mandhood's estate. The city
at large la bereaved by his untimely
ueam. - Among tiio uuiim eleiuwiii
today there has been little -else dis
cussed' than Roy's demise. It was sad
in the extreme and the family that sur-

the community. .
He is survived by his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. C. D. Goodnough, three sis
ters and two brothers, namely Mrs. J.
t. Walnum, Mrs. Charles BulJ; Ray
mond, Mis Cassle and Ronald, the
youngest of the family. All live In La
Grande. Outside of the immediate
family he has several relatives.
Funeral Tomorrow.
The funeral services will be held
from the Goodnough home in South
La Grande tomorrow afternoon at 2
o'clock. Rev. Upton H. Gibbs will of
ficiate. ''
The local Foresters' lodge will take
. prominent part in the ceremonies.
