was elected to congress for the terms
of 1871-1883, but resigned to take hi
seat In the senate, where he has since
been prominent and of late years the
admitted leader. He is the father-in-law
of John D. Rockefeller, Jr.-, son
of the head of the oil trust, and this
family connection has often led to
charges that he has unduly favored
the Standard Oil company and other
big corporations.
