went to Union by train, automobile
and teams, the La Grande high school
football team this afternoon played, a
picked team from Union. The play
ers went over In a large carryall. ' 1
Bacon, who will be a regular stu
dent In the high school hereafter, Is
with the team today, and will aid In
holding down the big beeves of the
Union team. The locals went over
with the understanding that the Union
lineup will Include several who are
not high school players, In fact, some
of them are old O. A. C. men. .Man
ager Clark, of the experiment farm,
who has speed, skill and weight suf
ficient to figure in O. A. C. football of
the past, was in the lineup. There
were others who have played in the
more Important teams of the state.
The high school filled in with lighter
men. Knowing this, La Grande had
nerved Itself to the extreme in hopes
of holding the Unionltes down to a
close score or break even at any rate.

Water Turned Loose.
Settlers in the Hermlston. valley to
day are rejoicing over the fact that
water was turned this morning Into
the 'big government ditch, and Is now
speeding on its way to the Cold
Springs reservoir, where it will be

The big gates were opened this
morning and the water Is now run
ning through' the concrete section of
the feed canal, recently built. The
temporary dams which have held back
the. seepage from the 'new concrete
lln'ng have been removed, and within
a few days the water will be pouring
over the big Inlet drop into the reser
voir. The water was turned In with a
email head this morning, and it will
be some time before the ditch will be
