Roseburg, Ore., Oct. 11. Mistaken
for a bear, Alex Frank, a Southern
Pacific brakerrfan, was instantly killed
yesterday by Carl Weber, his best
Wend. They were hunting near Rid
dle, 22 miles from Roseburg, when
they separated. Suddenly Weber saw

Progressing Satisfactory to All
Many Excellent Numbers Rendered.
Following the slight hitch In the
program yesterday, the Union Coun
ty Sunday school convention Is pro
gressing extremely satisfactory today.
Charles A. Phipps. the Sunday school
worker, and D, Osterhout, the field
worker for the Boise district, have ar
rived in the city and the delegates are
profiting by their presence. The ad
dress by Mr. Osterhout last evening
has been declared to be superb by all
who heard it. The program today has
hinged about these two men and the
sessions have been very Interesting.
Social Features, Too.
The basket luncheon today was a
highly enjoyable affair. ...All of .the
delegates and many from the city at
tended the social attraction and state
this afternoon- they will go again to
night, when a similar affair "will be
arranged.; . . . . ;

Chief among the papers today that
were taken by local people, were those
of Mrs. Willis of Elgin, . and Mrs.
Thomas Walslnger of Alicel.
The afternoon was no less replete
with' the excellent numbers.

Serious Injuries Yesterday Was on
Load When Chains Gave Way Hit
by Jin-Pole.
Struck by a falling jln-pole yester
day afternoon, with, such terrific
force that he Is hovering between life
and death, Andrew Nelson, a logger
for . the Grande Ronde Lumber com
pany,' employed on Rock creek, lies
in the Grande Ronde hospital today
with his scalp badly gashed and his
skull crushed. .
Working on Load.
Nelson was what Is designated as a
top loader, and when the car had been
loaded, went to loosen the Jln-pole
chain. Without warning the chains
broke, allowing the load to spread
The load struck tlje Jln-pole, used to
hoist the logs, tipping it from Its per
pendlcular posture. The heavy tlnv
ber 'fell with terrific force, striking
Nelson 'and Inflicting a frightful
wound, from the forehead to the back
of the crown. He was knocked uncon
sclous. Still In that condition he was
taken to Perry on the logging train
and to La Grande on a freight train,
with the' assistance of Conductor Fer
gus. At the hospital he regained tern
porary consciousness, but this morning
his condition indicates that he ia no
doubt fatally hurt.
Nelson Is an unmarried man who
claims Toronto, Canada, as his home
lie has been In the employ of the
Grande Ronde Lumber company but a
short time.

the argument on the motion for a
non-suit in the case of E. E. Brasel
vs. the O. R. & N. company. The ar
gument, was commenced last evening
and has been continued through the
entire day's session. As we go to
press Attorney Spencer is closing for
the O. R. & N. The case is being care
fully fought by both parties to the
suit and many points heretofore new
In such cases, are being brought forth.
Several witnesses have been examined
and many more in court waiting to be
brought to the stand in case the mo
tion for non-suit Is denied.

on of Montana, conferred with Roose
velt toduy. He declared the presiden
tial fight Is now centered in Ohio, In
diana and New York. He said:
"It Is, absurd to think that Bryan
can carry Wyoming and Utali. Bryan
will carry but few states west of the
Mississippi. I believe Taft will carry
New York by 100,000, and Minnesota
from 80,000 to 120,000."
