Quitters! Rank quitters! iThe meth
ods' used 'by Jack O'Brien of Ijaseball
notoriety still clings toj La Grande,
and took a prominent part In the foot
ball game there Saturday. There was
troubler from the jtlmi the Baker team
arrived, until Lai, Grande, refused to
finish, the game, thereby forfeiting the
game to Baker City by the score of 1
to 0. j
In the first place La Grande tried
to ring, in two rank' outsiders, one who
had started to school on Friday before
the game, and. .another ; who Intended
to attend school. It was anything to
beat Baker, but they overshot ' their
mark.'' It was not bona fide high
school team, for, they, played Chllders,
who Is well known here, having placed
baseball with" La Grande. ! He tends
bar In the morning , and . takes two
studies In the afternoon.
Professor MicklesOn',' who ' Coached
the team, was referee during the first
half, and penalized Baker on the mer
est pretenses, setting them back 50
yards at one tme.,., It was through
his efforts that La Grande made tielr
tvu.ituunu,.! tucj uu aui uuvance
the, ball more than 15 yards duhng
the whole game, while Baker caAied
the ball more than 100 yards. ' Mc
Kimm of Baker, ywho was referee jlurl
Ing the second half, stated that If he
khad penalized La Grande 10 yards on
every down he could not' have kept
even with the penalties of Mickleson.
It was because the La Grande babies
could not have everything they want
ed that they lost the game. The; ball
was In their possession when they fum
bled and a Baker man fell on it, hav
ing both arma around it while a La
Grande man got his leg on lt. Mlck
lcson butted In and declared it to be
La Grande's ball, wh)le McKlmm, the
official to decide the play, said it was
Baker's ball. La Grande refused to
play and McKlmm declared the game
forfeited by the score of. 1 to 0,
The boys here are eagerly awaiting
the game between La , Grande and
Pendleton, for they predict La Grande
will be defeated by a score of 30 to 0.
