Is seriously and painfully burned.
Wednesday, noon Mrs. Yeck was at

was lying on a bed In the sitting
room, and In which room she had
placed some wet blnnkets around the
Stove to dry. Closing the door of the
sitting room she wont Into the kitchen
to attend the household duties and
after many minutes had pnxsod she
discovered that the house was on fire,
Immediately she rushed Into the room
where the baby had been left, to find
the entire room a mass of flames,
which had vtnrted from tho stove 1
nltlng the blnnkets. She grabbed the
child, together with the' bed clothes
under It and stinted to escape from
the ro.im, but stepped on one of the
quilts and fell Into the burning blan
kcts. A largo celluloid back comb,
which she wore, Immediately caught
fire, and before she could save the
child and protect herself, the liRlr was
burned from her head and her scalp
badly burned. She received various
other burns, but none so bad as those
of the scalp. . Dr. Writing was sum

gical assistance was possible, ' the
mother was brought to this city.- At
last reports she was getting along as
well as could be expected, and her
recovery Is expected.

Steam Shovef at Work.
A crew of men and a large steam
shovel was brought to Elgin this week
and was sent down the river to a point
about sfeven miles below the city,
where a large-embankment Is to be
moved. Since the new road was con
structed a slide occurred at a point
which has been causing the company
no end of worry and several thous
and dollars. The entire point of a hill
at that place seems to be sliding to
wards the big track, and it Is hoped to
avoid a big slide by removing a large
portion of It.
