home this morning. Mr. Wade reports
the fair a great success. Mrs. Wade,
who accompanied him. stopped off in
Pendleton to visit friends.
R. E. Smith, of the West store, Is
expecting his tiged father thl3 evening
or tomorrow morning. Mr. Smith's
home Is In Chicago and he Is making
the trip overland alone, despite his ad
vanced age. He expects to remain in
the city several months. - . .
Mr. and Mrs. A. N." McDonald of
Seymour, Iowa, are in the city visit
ing attorneys C. E. and G. T. Cochran.
The Iowans have visited at Hood River
and other sections of the northwest
and will start on their return tour
ihortly.
,H. E. Happersett of Portland, is irii
the city the guest of his son, C. E.
Happersett. Mr. Happersett is on his
way home from -s an extended tour
through the east,' having journeyed as
far in that direction as Philadelphia.
He will remain several days.
Henry Chambers of Cove, is over to
day, and states that a heavy wind
storm a few days ago caused a great
many apples and prunes to fall. The
prunes can be gathered and dried, but
the greater portion of the apples will
be lost.
G. W. Baker, one of the leading
fruitgrowers and farmers residing in
Jhe vicinity of Cove, was a La Grande
Visitor this morning. Mr. Baker has
been a subscriber to the Weekly Ob
server for a number of years, and this
morning called to have his subscription
changed from the weekly to the dally.
Mr. Baker says a weekly paper no
longer serves the purposes of a live,
up-to-date farmer.
Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Forest end ex
pert to leave Wednesday for Wallowa,
here they have real estate holdings.
Mr. Forestead expects to build a neat
cttage this winter, and by the time

Berlin, Oct 15 The German bal
loon Busley, last of the contestants in
the International balloon race to be
accounted for, 'fell Into the North sea,
according to a dispatch. Dr. Nlemyer
and Hans Heidemann was piloting the
balloon. -They were rescued by the
steamer Prince Wilhelm. .
All entrants have now been account
ed for. Busley was disqualified as the
terms specify the balloon must light
on land. .' j ' , ,. J
Nlemyer said he passed over Ham
burg Wednesday morning. He saw
the North sea. but had 17: sacks of
ballast and had lost but little gas. He
was sure he could cross the sea and
reach England. After sailing 100 mites
over the sea the wind veered to the
northward, threatening to carry him
out over the, Arctic ocean. He feared

The Good Roads convention slated
for this city October 22 provided the
local business men would defray ap
proximately $100 expenses has been
postponed until the 29th. This ' was
not done "because the expense money
was not forthcoming, but because the
state officials' of the association
thought it expedient to do so for other
reasons.
The soliciting committee consisting
of W. H. Bohnenkamp and G. L. Clea
ver report that they have secured do
nations from every one they have wait
ed on and that the money required
to get the boosters here, will be sub
scribed in all due time. The delay in
appearance of the Good Roads boost
ers will not dampen the ardor evinced
by auto owners, farmers and mer
chants, alike.
Revivals Grow Interesting.
The revival meeting In progress at
the M.1 E. church is taking on the Dro-
portlons of a real old-time revival.
The Interest increases and the attend
ance also. Evangelist W. L. MeDlar-
mld preaches on "The Old-Time Re
llglon" tonight. Every meeting Is alive
with Interest from start to finish.

Seattle, Oct 15. While showing
mend , how a showman was nearly
killed by a wire carrying 60,000 volts
of electricity In the city lighting plant
two years ago, J. Harvey Dennis, a
city claim agent, came In contact with
the same wire today. on the upper floor
of the plant. Following a flash he
was hurled across the room, where he
lay writhing from frightful burns. He
was removed to the hospital were sur-
geans said it was almost certain the
legs would have to be amputated be

man was probably fatally Injured and
two seriously, today, when a runaway
work car collided with a heavily load
ed street car at the foot of a steep
grade on Union street Women and
children rushed to the front door,
while the work car, beyond control of
the motorman, was tearing down the
track behind them. The crash was
terrific. It la not expected that Mrs.
R. T. Roldron, a passenger, will recover.
