Believing that the former saloons
of Pendleton have, or should have
nothing to hide, the city council last
evening considered an ordinance pro
hibiting the use of screens In the bar
rooms of the city. The ordinance was
referred to the ordinance committee.
"We know the local option law has
"been violated," said Mayor Murphy
last evening, "and the purpose of this
ordinance is to make it harder to ac
complish such violation. The people
of this county declared' against liquor
spiling at the recent election and we
want to see their wishes enforced. The
law is not aimed at any one in par
ticular, but if a man, purposes to vio
late the local option law by selling
liquor over a bar, we hope to make
him do so In plain sight." Pendleton

Socialists Want to Shine,
.. That the Bryan-Kern club is going to
be forced into a aetiate with the social
ists of this city was the statement
made yesterday by a prominent mem
ter or the local socialist club, says a
Pendleton paper. Today the Hon. T.
J. Lewis, a socialist speaker of wide
experience and travel, will arrive In
this city to hold meetings every night
in the Milarkey hall on Court street,
and his supporters in this city . are
anxious to have him meet ex-Senator
John M.- Gearln, who is to speak here
on Saturday night.
The president and several members
of the Bryan-Kern club have ex
pressed themselves as certalnA how
ever, that no debate will take place be
tween the two clubs as they (the dem
ocrats) prefer to direct their entire
energies toward presenting the Issues
of the campaign to the people. They
hold that there Is nothing to be gained
from a discussion on the part of elthe
of the two leading parties with the
smaller parties. And at this critical
lime of the political season there is no
time to be lost. In fact, they say they
have no Issue with the socialists, that
affects the coming campaign and it
Is for the purpose of boosting Bryan
