D. B. Hamlin arrived In La Grande
yesterday from Idaho after an absence
of 20 years. He assisted in cutting the
last crop of hay on the ground vhere
now stands the principal business por
tion of this city. He lived In South La
Crande with his parents prior to the
railroad. Fo,r the past few years he
ha lived In Idaho. He leaves tonight
to accept a position as foreman of a
section crew at Durkee.
A. C. Miller Is over from Enterprise
and will remain a few days. Archie
always did think a good deal of Wal
lowa county, but since the railroad
has entered their domain he is almost
Irreslstibfe. To talk with him In a

of F. H. Byrklt, as president of the
First National bank of Red Oak, after
a continued service of 85 years.

tory of the bank, which in a measure
includes a history of Mr. Byrklt, as
he organized the bank, which accord
ing to the article,Nhe started In Sep
tember! 1873, with, a capital of $5000,
which' he borrowed. A few months
later he reorganized his bank and
made It a national bank, with a cap
ital stock of $50,000.

chief contenders for the laurels in this

defeat was something of a surprise.
However, Blrnle won an undisputed ti
tle to enter the finals, as the match
wetit but two sets, Blrnle winning, 6-2,
6-0.
Mixed doubles will be played tomor
row night when Miss Ruby Thleson
and E. E. Bragg face Miss -Floy Mas
see and A. W. Nelson. The men's
doubles are. planned to be opened to

wife was adjudged Insane and commit
ted to the insane asylum." Fleming
was convicted on Saturday. He shot
and killed Frank Langford who was
passing his ranch. They had quar
reled over an irrigation ditch. '
