. The Christ Stock company will not
show again in this city, notwithstand
ing that their contract called for a
full week's stand. The Steward was
dark last night, and It 'will not be
lighted again . for the company now
here. .. . ' '
The troupe will likely remain in the
city until Sunday at which time they
go back over the route they have Just
completed. Their advance "man- lis
how working back to Portland setting
dates, and regardless of the fact that
they have recently showed there, they
are promised full houses if they come
back. The reason they did not" show
last night was because the C door ' re
ceipts totaled less than $5. The troupe
and Its management have, exhibited
remarkable patience in showing to
small houses earlier in the week, and
their action In not raising the curtain
last night la excusable.

"Dry" Hotel Falls.
- New Tork, Oct. 2. That no big
metropolitan hotel can be run at, a
profit, or even pay expenses, without
a liquor license, Is the declaration of
the managers of the Hotel Gotham,
which wilt be sold at auction under
foreclosure of Judgment on October 13.
The big 21-story hostelry is among the
finest In New York, but has been a
financial failure from the first, Its
nearness to the Fifth avenu Presbyter
Ian church preventing the hotel man
agers from securing a liquor license.
Managers of other big hotels point to
the Gotham as an object lesson and
declare that If the metropolis should
ever become "dry," the hotels would
be forced to nearly double their rates
In order to make a profit.
