Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Price of Port
land, who have been guests of Mr. and
Mrs. A. T. Hill for the past two weeks
return home in the morning.
The B. of L. F. & E. will give an
oyster supper at the K. of P. hall on
Friday evening, October 2. All mem
bers and their ladles are invited.
Bert Campbell of Pendleton, time
keeper on the O. R. & N. construc
tion crews near Bonneville, was In
the city yesterday for a short stay.
Chief of Police Walden'a report for
the month of September, which will be
submitted to the council next Wednes
day night, will show a total of 41 ar

Pastor W. H. Gibson's new brick res
idence on ! Adams avenue and Hall
street, Is progressing nicely. It will
be a modern cottage with up-to-date
equipment throughout.
Miss Laura Green has been employ
ed as leader of the M. E. church choir
and will assume immediate charge. She
Is a musician of no mean ability and
the choir will profit by her leadership.
M. W. Huffman of Union, came over
last evening and accompanied the re
mains of his uncle, the late John
Stanley, who died in Nampa, Cal., ,la8t
Sunday, to Wallowa, where the fune
ral took place this afternoon.
Peter O'SullIvan went to Pendleton
this morning to spend a few days with
friends. In climbing m the train he
remarked that he was leaving town to
be gone until after the grand Jurys has
met. ,
E. B. Hansen, formerly employed
on the Great Northern In oMntana, is
now in the city to "enter the brakeman
service for the O. R. & N. He Is a
son of Engineer Hansen, of the Telo
caset helper.
Rev. W. H. Olbson goes to Biflter
City tomorrow to attend the quarterly
meeting of the Assoclatlonal Mission
board of the Grande Ronde Baptist
association, of which body he Is pres
ident. He will return tomorrow night.

Mrs. Susan B. Clement, all of Beaver-
ton, and Mrs. Otella B. Clement of

.' Obituary.
Mrs. Ira Klrtley, died at her home
Wednesday morning, September 30, at
1:40 o'clock, after a long Illness of
consumption. She leaves a husband
and three children, the oldest 15 years
of age, and the youngest 9.
. Her mother and sister, Beulahj and
brother Peter, were at her bedside in
the last hours of Illness. Her brother,
Lew, and sister, Leola, -could not be
present at her death, but arrived later.
They have not been able to find her
youngest brother, Jack, up to the
present time.
The deceased was 32 years of age at
the time of her death, and had been a
resident of this city for about 19 years,
and was much loved by all who knew
her. The funeral will be held Friday
morning from the home on Spring
avenue, at 10 o'clock.

Indicted Men Plead today.
Appearing by counsel In the circuit
court this afternoon, the men recent
ly indicted by the grand. Jury fdr
breaking the prohibition law, asked to
be given until tomorrow morning to
plead, says the East' Oregonlan of
Wednesday night. Their request was
arranted and unless a further delay oc
curs they will plead before Judge
Bean in the morning.
, Further indictments were brought
in by the grand Jury today, but noth
ing regarding the cases has been yet
made public.
Ireland on Trial.
Practically the entire day has been
taken up with the trial of James C.
Ireland, who is. accused of having sto-'
len a team from the McBride stable
at Athena.
Ireland is being defended by Attor
ney Dan P. Smythe, while C. J. Fergu
son is prosecuting. The state com
pleted its case this forenoon and for
the defense Ireland himself was upon
the stand this afternoon as his own
chief witness. From all appearances
the case will go to the Jury this afternoon.

Scenic filled to Doors. .
With that excellent comedian, F. A.
Walters, and Morris & Morris, to help
the program, and a splendid line of
films, the Scenic last evening filled its
house to the doors. This happened
at all the performances,, and Mr. Gar
dlnler only wishes be had a larger
house. The vaudeville attraction Is a
drawing card. Visitors shout with
laughter every time they see Walters,
even though they go every night. The
electric pictures will be seen fox the
last time this evening.
PASTIME SOLD OUT.
O. M. Ileacoek Will Take Charge of
the Theater Tomorrow.
Another change has taken place In
the ownership of one of the electric
ineaters;nere, wnen O. M. weacoca
completed arrangements today for as
suming the ownership and manage
ment of the Pastime theater. . Mr.
Housh, the present owner, has been In
charge of that popular playhouse for
the past two or three months, and has
effected many Improvements both to
the building and the show itself. While
the deal Is not,yct completed, It win
be as soon as Mr. Housh returns from
Union, where hetoen't with a crew of
men several days ago to start con
struction of the transmission lines from
Union to Rock creek, near Haines.
Mr. Heacock will continue tha pres
ent policy, varying only to reinstate
the full orchestra. This will give an
abundance of music for the house.
Clyde Scheurer, who was an under
study to B. M. Sherwood, will have
charge of the mechanical end of the
house hereafter. Mr. Heacock hopes
to enjoy the present biiBineBs and
bring new patrons regularly. He will
