P. A. Charlton Is back from the Sa
lem fair and Portland horse show with
a pitiful tale of woe. His woe is not
woe, but in reality a matter that is
pleasing to him and other lovers of
horseflesh in this county, for three
animals from this county took blue
ribbons at the state fair. White he is
extremely" optimistic and full of praise
for every phase of the highly success
ful fair, there is nothing that pleases
him more than to know of the win
nings, made by local horses.
The beautiful animal formerly
owned by Bob Smith but now' the
property of C.'W. Todd .of Portland,
took the first prize among the gentle
men roadsters. Two ponies reared at
Cove took the blue ribbon in the pony
class. , ' - - - -: '
This is more honor than one would
naturally surmise; but when it is re
membered that the best animals . of
Washington, Oregon and California
were entered In these classes, the cap
tures made by Grande Ronde horses
only bear out the old story that there
are none better, than the horses bred

Maurice Fitzmaurlce( the effulgent
legal, literary and lecturing light,
whose glory was reflected upon La
Grande for a short time last year, is
now In trouble at Lewlston, Idaho,
where he is fighting Washington au
thorities who desire to take him back
to Garfield county, Washington, to
answer to a charge of criminal libel
brought by the editor of alrlval paper.
The story of Fitzmaurlce's troubles
Is thus told by a Lewlston dispatch:
Maurice O. Fitzmaurlce, editor of
the Garfield County Standard, Is un
der arrest here on a. charge of crimi
nal libel, complaint having been f it 31
by H. C. Benbow, editor of a rival pa
per in Garfield county, Washington.
Fitzmaurlce will resist extradition, but
In the meantime he will be held in tht
county jail here, pending application
for the writ.
Fitzmaurlce carries letters from
prominent Irish busines men, one of
them being a letter from the lord
mayor of Dublin, where Fitzmaurlce
formerly resided. Benbow, it Is said,
will prosecute Fitzmaurlce for crlm
Inal libel, based on an editorial In
which the Standard charges Benbow
with being the leader of a band of
cattle rustlers.
Fitzmaurlce denies all knowledge
of the editorial, which, he says, was
written during his absence and with
out his consent. He owns stock In the
two papers and his name as editor ap
pears in the Pomeroy paper. The ar
rest is said to be the climax of a sen
sational political campaign, In which
Fitzmaurlce has , supported Senator
Levi Ankeny and his friends and
fought Jones, Cosgrove and their sup-,
porters.
