DKT01
WkHa Walla, Sept 15. (Special.)
With an oteusloiiul glimpse of u
very ahapely limb covered with pale
pink tights, and peeping out at them
from between the silt In a dlrectolre
gown, the business men of Seattle
were given a genuine surpi when
they appeared at the Cotninerilul club
rooms In Walla Walla Wednexduy
night for the reception that was ten
dered them by the business men , of
Walla Walla. But their surprise was
even more genuine when the beauti
ful young lady wearing the slashed
nklrl. approached them, one after the
other, and pinned upon the lapel of
their coau a small blue ribbon.
Her miMNlim lumpieie, the young
lady withdrew from mthe room, and
It was not until after the last fleeting
gllmpsa of the young lady was ob
tained that the visitors took occasion
to read the wording upon tho badges.
Until that moment their eyes had
been busy looking elsewhere.
On the badges was the Inscrlptloa,
"M'alla Walla County Fair. October
12 to 17. Boost for It with the Seat
tle Spirit' A long hearty laugh went
up when the visitors from Seattle
realized what a neat little advertising
scheme had been worked upon them,
but from the. manner In which they
enjoyed it, they certainly would have
made no objections to a repetition. ,
And the identity of the young lady?
That Is the all absorbing question In
Walla Walla at present Peculiar as
It may seem, everybody was so in
terested In the gown that was worn,
that no one paid any attention to the
girl's face. True, it was heavily veil
ed, but had the curiosity as to her
identity have been strong at "that time,
there would. have been some way of
finding out Just who the young lady
was. ' But those present were all In
terested In something : else at that
time, and the girl was allowed to es
cape without her name becoming
known. The only man who does know
is Secretary Robert Johnson of the
Fair association, but' he claims he,
promised the girl, upon his honor,
not to reveal her name. He says, how
ever, that she Is a well known society
girl of the Garden City.
