inaugurated until this evening, when
Miss Floy Massee and.. Miss Ruby
Thelson took the court for champion
ship. Thomas Bruce and George T,
Cochran continued the men's singles
this evening. The Mrs. Van Buren
Frarices Massee match comes off to

MAY REJECT CARXEGIE.
Tlio Dalles Council May Fruwtrate Car-
negie library Movement.
The Dalles, Sept 23. An injunction
will be issued, r-straining the city
from building the Carnegie library as
soon as the city council adopts plans
for the building, according to a state
ment made by Councilman J. C. Eg
bert at the meeting of the city fathers
last night.
When the offer of Andrew Carnegie
was first made to the city, the steel
magnate agreeing to give The Dalles
810,000 for a library If the city would
furnish a suitable piece of property
to erect the structure and appropriate
81000 a year for its maintenance, the
matter was referred to a vote of th?
people, to ascertain whether or not
they wanted a Carnegie library.
The matter was voted on a year ago
last June, resulting in a tie vote. Some
of the citizens were opposed to the
building of the library, on the grounds
that they did not care to have a 11
brary which was donated, preferring
for the city to build one Itself, paying
for the entire cost.
However, after the election, the
council voted to go ahead with the
matter and purchased a ilto for the
library at the corner of Fourth and
Washington streets. It was not neces
sary mat me matter be referred to
the people, the council having the
necessary power to go ahftid with tho
work.
The council appropriated 83000 for
tho porperty and 8SO0, tho additional
amount necessary to be mined for the
purchose of the land, was subscribed
by cltlxons. Architect Crandall, to
gether with the building committee,
was Instructed to draw plans for the
library.
At the meeting of the council last
nlRht Attorney B. 8, Huntington stnted
that the committee and Mr. Crandall
had Avorked on the plans and Specifi
cations for nine months, having con
ferred with experienced librarians all
over the country and had agreed on
plans for a building which could be
constructed for 810.000, the amount
of money which has been given by
Mr. Carnegie.
The matter of taking action on the
plans will be taken up at the next
meeting, the councilman desiring to
go over them In the meantime, and In
all probability, they will be adopted.
It Is hoped that the work of building
the library may be commenced this
fall and it Is thought that It will be,
lor even tnougn an injunction were
brought to restrain the city from build
ing the library, there Is little fear of
It being sustained in court.
