Union county should never let an
other state fair pass ' without having
an exhibit there. Our state fair Is be.
Ing recognized as one of the events of
the year. Especially; is thU true' as
; long as the railroads give special rates
to homeBeekars during September.
Many go to the state fair expecting to'
see exhibits trrm all portions of the
titate. Thus It will be seen that a
county exhibit at our mt -;;
nrlng results.- Another thing that our
people are rajlier' slow In recognizing
and that is, the people of the western
portion of tho state, In other words,
residents of the Willamette valley and
southern .Oregon,1 have little concep
tion of the productiveness of eastern
Oregon. They were educated in the
years gone by that nothing but range
horses and sagebrush were produced
east of the Cascades, and If the coun
ties would all combine and send rup
resentative exhibits ,to the state fair,
It would be a revelation to hundreds
of the old pioneers and their sons and
daughters. It would do this portion
! of the state an Immense amount of
good. ' - .5 '.- ' - ' .

The little rlty of Slanton, In the
Willamette valley, has a ohnlr factory
that Is shipping goods into La Grande.
This shows that the business nu n there
are alive to their opportunities. We
have several things here that oould be
manufactured us yell as anywhere.
W mlKbt not manufacture rawhide
ottom chairs, but we could lunnufac
ture a whole lot of the cheaper grad-
of furniture and spring and mat
tresses that are shipped Into cantern
Oregon from both the -nnt and the
west.
Another year nim to be rolIlnR
around nnd we still have no vinegar
plant.
