the Algonquin Tennis club in this city,
opened at the courts this evening with
the first matches In the preliminaries
which will last until after the first
of next week. At that time the semi
finals In the singles . will be com
menced .end when they are through,
the mixed doubles, men's doubles and
ladles' doubles will attract the atten
tion of the flub members. ; Consider
able Interest centers in the prelimin
aries. ' The, club boasts of several ex
perts and the rank and file of the
membership has reached a degree of
efficiency more or' less touching on
first-class.' '

will be pulled off every evening until
the preliminaries end. The first

isation which promises to mark -an
epoch In the history of the fruitgrow
ing Industry of the Walla Wallu val
ley was effected yesterday afternoon,
when more than 50 fruitgrowers met
at the court house and banded them
selves together In n preliminary meet
ing to work for the better prices 'on
fruits and flaht any advances that may
be made In freight charges. Although
the gathering yesterday was only'a
preliminary event the final outcome
Is expected to take In a broader and
wider scope of work than Is at pres
ent to be undertaken.
