Frank Brlggs of Starkey Is being
tried for contempt of court today.
This Is his second offense,, and the
case today is being fought with con
slderable vim; He has been twice en
Joined from using water purported" to
be the property of H. T. Hill, also of
Starkey, who is the complaining wit
ness. Attorney Hodgln appears for the
state while Attorneys T. H. Crawford
and J. F. Baker are counsellor the
defendant. It Is expected that the case
will be brought to ' a close tonight,
though the court lost an hour after
lunch to allow th'e deputy prosecuting
attorney to appear In the Justice court,
where the docket is somewhat con
gested. Judge Knowles Is hearing the
contempt case.

to North Powder today to prosecute
a man by the name of Davis, who is
alleged td have unmercifully beaten
his wife, and consequently he could
not be present at the dale healings
set In the Justice court. His deputy,
Attorney lludglns, appeared In court
this afternoon at 1 o'clock and se
cured a stay In proceedings until to
morrow, when the cases of Charles
Anderson, accused of selling liquor,
T.ev. J. R. Knodell, assistant super
intendent of the Oregon Anti-Saloon
league, preached tn the Central Church
of Christ yesterday morning and In
the Presbyterian church Jn the eve
ning. He alSo addressed a union
meeting of the young people in the
Methodist church. Mr. Knodell l
very Interesting speaker and his audi
ences were highly pleased. He told of
the wonderful transformation taking
place in our state, under the local op.
