Two ordinances covering the subject
have been prepared at the Instance of
Mayor Murphy and were presented to
the council last night. They are now
In the riandst of' the" ordinance com
mittee and seemingly both measure
will be passed without opposition.
The first ordinance presented Is one
which prohibits the sale of Intoxlcut
Ing beverages within the city. The
language of tne ordinance Is Identical
with that of the state law, excepting
In one or two unimportant particulars.
The penalty for violating the ordinance
was left blank and will be filed in by
the committee.
Xi-ar Boor Ordinance.
The" second ordlnanco proposed is
Intended to place resorts that sell near
beer and other non-Intoxicating malt
liquors upon a license basis. ' The
amount to bo paid for the license Is
not yet fixed, nor has the penalty for
violations yet been agreed upon.
Before a mnn may secure a license
to sell near beer or kindred beverages
he must make written application to
the council stating where his place Is
to be located and he must have his
application endorsed by.nt least three
reputable citizens. The application
must also net forth his former occu
pation. Under the terms of the ordinance
proprietors of near beer establish
ments are barred from selling drinks
to Indians or minors.
When the ordinances were presented

that he was responsible for them and

It possible for the police department
to properly handle the local situation
a pack horse is reduced from' 10 or
12 hours to two or two and one-half
hours. The labor and supplies ex
pended In cutting this 10 or 12 miles
of trail through the dense brush and
timber, cost 5 0 0. Those acquainted
with the trail say It is money well

The cabin bui'lt at the Tollgate ran
ger station cost about $4t5, and the
cabin on the Umatilla cost about $200.
Mr. Schmltj says pluns are already
laid for other cabins and tralis to be
built as soon as the rainy season opens,
eliminating the danger of forest flics.
