The tnuch-heraMed dlrectolre gown
has made its appearance in La Grande.
La Grande is always sedate and un
susceptible to sensations, hence, there
was no terrible stampede when the
Parisian gown that blockades thor
oughfares In New York and Paris,
and creates commotions In Spokane
that teem, of riot color, when it made
Its appearance here this morning. ! The
gown Is slit up to the knee and dis
plays a beautifully colored and dainty
hosiery in clear contour, but, the neck
geur is in variation from the true style.
It is so characteristic of the dlrectolre
idea that it can Immediately be detect
ed as the famous gown. The slit in
the side of the affair is the stamp that
betrays' Its origin. . Many have viewed
thjs wonderful gown as worn serenely
and unblushlngly by a wax model In
the window of the Peoples store.

Washington, D. C, , Sept. 18. Or-
vllle Wright wns injured yesterday
when his aeroplane collapsed, killing
Lieutenant Thomas Selfrtdge of the
signal corps. . He is reported resting
well today, the most serious Injury
being to his right side. Several ribs
were also fractured. Experts declared
today the accident could have been
avttrted."
JtViight had gone 75 feet In the air
when the propeller broke, plunging
the aeroplane, Selfrldge and Wright
to the ground In the presence of 2000
spectators. . .
' .Wright "is" too distressed over the
death of Selfrldge to make plans,
though he has not. lost faith In his
machine. .. Ther l rin il'l.

WrlRlit's Brother Depressed,''
Lemans, France, Sept. 18.- Wilbur
Wright locked himself and his aero
plane In the shed today, . as he Is
greatly depressed over the accident to
his brother. He has postponed Indef
initely the flights which were sched
uled. It is feared the great advance
In aerial navigation made by the
Wrights will be given a great setback
In that th confidence of the nations
In their machine will be weakened.
It was Selfrldge's greatest ambition
to fly with Wright. He had his heart
set on it. It was one of the proudest
moments of his life when he boarded
the machine on what proved to be a
fatal ride. Selfrldge was born in San
Francisco and was 28 years of age.
